Union County’s colonial history begins with English settlers from Connecticut who established Elizabethtown in 1664 — the first English-speaking settlement in New Jersey. In 1668, Philip Carteret, New Jersey’s first colonial governor, made Elizabethtown the capital of the colonial territory. Singer’s Elizabeth factory became one of the largest manufacturing facilities in the world, employing thousands of workers and attracting immigrant communities from across Europe. The Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church in Union Township — dating to 1730 — was the first church in New Jersey to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Shady Rest Golf and Country Club in Scotch Plains was the home course of John Matthew Shippen Jr., the first African American golf professional to compete in the United States Open Championship — also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Kean University, founded in 1855 in Union Township, is one of the largest public universities in New Jersey.
