Linden has been an industrial city since before most of its current residents were born. The General Motors Linden Assembly Plant opened in 1937 on an 80-acre campus adjacent to Linden Airport, initially building Buicks, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles from knock-down kits at a facility covering 2.6 million square feet.
