Allentown was founded on May 18, 1762 by William Allen — a wealthy Philadelphia shipping merchant who had served as mayor of Philadelphia and was among the most prominent men in colonial Pennsylvania. Allen purchased 5,000 acres along the Lehigh River in 1735 and laid out the city that would bear his name. From its founding, Allentown grew as a court and market town, then as an industrial center as the Lehigh Canal opened in 1829 and connected the region’s anthracite coal and iron resources to Philadelphia and New York City. The city’s role in American Revolutionary history is direct and specific: after the British defeated the Continental Army at the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, eleven Philadelphia church bells — including the Liberty Bell, then called the State House Bell — were evacuated northward through Bucks County (stopping overnight in Quakertown) to Allentown, where the Liberty Bell was stored in the basement of Zion Reformed Church on West Hamilton Street from September 1777 through June 1778, the entirety of the British occupation of Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell Museum on Hamilton Street marks the site today.
George Washington passed through Allentown after his December 26, 1776 victory at the Battle of Trenton — the pivotal crossing of the Delaware that reversed the course of the war. Washington and his staff traveled through the city, proceeding up Water Street (now Lehigh Street), where they stopped at present-day Wire Mill to rest and water their horses before continuing to their post. Less than a week later came the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777. In the decades that followed independence, Allentown grew steadily: Mack Trucks arrived in 1905; PPL Corporation anchored the city’s institutional presence in the PPL Building at 322 feet, the tallest in Center City; Cedar Crest College (founded 1867) and Muhlenberg College (founded 1848) gave the city its undergraduate identity; and the city’s residential neighborhoods filled in with the Victorian rowhouses, Craftsman bungalows, and working-class rows that still define Allentown’s residential character today.
