Coopersburg was settled around 1730, initially known as Freyburg after Joseph Frey, a local tavern owner and judge whose name identified the community in its earliest years. By the time the borough was incorporated, it had been renamed Coopersburg in honor of Judge Peter Cooper, and for many years the town was known as a center for popular cattle sales at the estate of Tilghman S. Cooper. In 1961, an electrical engineer named Joel Spira founded Lutron Electronics in Coopersburg and invented the first solid-state dimmer switch — a device that used a semiconductor to control the voltage flowing to a light bulb, replacing the resistance coil that had made earlier dimmers impractical and potentially dangerous. For the first time, residential dimming was practical, reliable, and safe. Lutron’s world headquarters campus remains in Coopersburg today.
