Replacement Windows in Slatington, PA

Nicholas Kern became the first European settler in what would become Slatington in 1737, establishing a sawmill along the Lehigh River that would serve the Pennsylvania frontier for the next two decades. The Lenape had been living in the area before Kern arrived, using the route that would become Pennsylvania Route 873 as their Warriors Path — the same road that still runs north and south through the borough via Main Street and Walnut Street. When Benjamin Franklin was organizing the defenses of the Pennsylvania frontier and reported to Governor Morris in 1756, he noted that he had procured boards and timber from Kern’s sawmill at Slatington. The community Franklin documented in 1756 would become, in the following century, one of Pennsylvania’s most productive industrial boroughs.

The industry that gave Slatington its name arrived in the 1840s, brought by two Welshmen who recognized the slate deposits along the Lehigh River from their experience in the Welsh quarries of Europe. Owen Jones and William Roberts opened the first quarry in 1845 on land leased from Jonas Kern — Nicholas Kern’s descendant — just north of the original Kern mill. Their Tunnel Quarry produced roofing slate. By 1847 the operation that would become the Lehigh Slate Company was producing slate mantels and slate slabs. By 1884, David Williams’ company alone had reached an annual capacity of 1,300,000 school slates — the small flat pieces of slate on which American schoolchildren wrote their lessons before paper became affordable. Structural iron, knit goods, and silk were also manufactured in the borough. Slatington was incorporated as a borough in 1864 at the height of the slate era, with Robert McDowell as its first mayor. Eventually up to 20 quarries operated in and around the borough. The borough’s very name tells the story: Slatington, the town of slate.

The Slatington Historic District and the Fireman’s Drinking Fountain were both added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, recognizing the borough’s preserved 19th-century character. Victory Park provides the community with a pool, disc golf course, and the Angelo J. Scarselletti Amphitheater. With a median construction year of 1966 and 38.6% of homes predating 1940, Slatington’s housing stock spans from the period homes of the slate era to the postwar residential development that filled in the borough after World War II. We install Andersen replacement windows throughout all of Slatington Borough. Every window is a genuine Andersen product, backed by Andersen’s warranty.
