New Britain Borough sits at the crossroads of Bucks County history. Eugene James built his estate on this ground around 1731, and the Mathews homestead — a fine Colonial house built in 1744 on the site of an earlier structure destroyed by fire — was among the first substantial homes in what would become the borough. The North Pennsylvania Railroad opened its station in New Britain in 1856, connecting the agricultural village to Philadelphia and transforming it into the commuter community that the borough’s character still reflects. On the edge of the borough, Delaware Valley University traces its origins to 1896, when Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf — inspired by a visit to Leo Tolstoy’s agricultural commune in Russia and Tolstoy’s question ‘Why do your people not go back to farming?’ — returned to Philadelphia and founded the National Farm School to give young Jewish immigrants practical agricultural education and a path to self-sufficiency.
