Replacement Windows in Warminster, PA

Warminster Township was named for the market town of Warminster in Wiltshire, England — a name applied to this stretch of Bucks County as early as 1685, before the township’s borders were formally established in 1711. The land was purchased from the Lenni Lenape on June 23, 1683, and the first English and Scotch-Irish settlers established farms across the area through the 1680s and 1690s. For most of its history, Warminster was rural farmland. As recently as 1955, the township had no residential subdivisions and only one housing complex. What transformed Warminster permanently was an event that began in March 1941: the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation broke ground on 370 acres of Warminster farmland, built a factory at peak employment of 6,800 workers, and after the Navy seized the facility in 1943 following Brewster’s mismanagement, set in motion the transformation of the site into one of the most consequential aerospace research facilities in American history.

The Johnsville Naval Air Development Center operated in Warminster from 1944 to 1996. Its defining achievement was the world’s largest and most powerful human centrifuge — a 180-ton machine with a 50-foot arm driven by a 4,000-horsepower General Electric motor, capable of spinning a gondola to 173 miles per hour and generating 40 Gs of force. Engineers anchored it directly into bedrock; they chose Warminster specifically because the bedrock here is 95% stable and lies only 5 to 6 feet below the surface — the most geologically ideal location in the region for anchoring a 180-ton machine. In 1959, NASA selected the Johnsville centrifuge to train the Mercury Seven astronauts for the G-forces of spaceflight. John Glenn trained here. Neil Armstrong trained here. Gemini and Apollo crews trained here, as did X-15 rocket plane pilots. An average person blacks out at 6 Gs; the centrifuge could impose 40 — at that force, a 175-pound person would feel the weight of 7,000 pounds. Beyond the centrifuge, NADC scientists produced the prototype flight data recorder — the aircraft ‘black box’ — fire-retardant textiles, self-tinting photo-gray lenses, elements of modern GPS systems, and nearly 50 patents per year. The Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum preserves this history at The Fuge, 599 Newtown Road, Warminster.

The residential Warminster that homeowners know today — the Colonials, split-levels, and ranches that fill the township’s 10.2 square miles — was built out almost entirely after 1955, as the aerospace activity at Johnsville drew workers and families to the area. That postwar housing stock, now 40 to 65 years old, is squarely in the replacement window age range. The Warminster Station at the terminus of the SEPTA Warminster Line provides direct commuter rail service to Center City Philadelphia. Hurst Performance — the legendary American automotive company behind the Hurst gear shifter — was based in Warminster through the 1950s and 1970s. We install Andersen replacement windows throughout all of Warminster Township. Every window is a genuine Andersen product, backed by Andersen’s warranty.
