Doylestown Borough is the county seat of Bucks County and one of the most culturally distinguished small communities in Pennsylvania — a 2.2-square-mile downtown whose concentration of historic landmarks, cultural institutions, and walkable character earned it USA Today’s recognition as the best small-town cultural scene in America in 2019 and a place on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations list in 2001. Henry Chapman Mercer was born in Doylestown in 1856, educated at Harvard, and briefly studied law at Penn — only to spend the rest of his life doing the opposite of lawyering. Appointed Curator of American and Prehistoric Archaeology at the Penn Museum in the early 1890s, Mercer grew increasingly alarmed by what industrialization was doing to American artisanal culture. He apprenticed himself to a Pennsylvania German potter, founded the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in 1898, and over the following two decades built three extraordinary structures along what is now called the Mercer Mile. All three — the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works (1911–1912), Fonthill Castle (1907–1912), and the Mercer Museum (1914–1916) — were built from hand-poured reinforced concrete, among the earliest uses of that structural technology in America. Mercer chose concrete deliberately: the Great Boston Fire of 1872 had destroyed his aunt’s collection of medieval armor stored in wooden structures, and he was determined his own collections would not suffer the same fate. When locals mocked his concrete buildings, he lit a bonfire on the Mercer Museum’s roof to prove it would not burn. All three are National Historic Landmarks. His tiles are set into the floor of the Pennsylvania State Capitol — 400 mosaics tracing the history of the Commonwealth — and in buildings from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to the Casino at Monte Carlo.

On a farm in Doylestown, Oscar Hammerstein II wrote three of the most celebrated musicals in American history: Oklahoma! (1943), South Pacific (1949), and The Sound of Music (1959). The James A. Michener Art Museum — housed in the converted former Bucks County prison across the street from the Mercer Museum — holds one of the most significant collections of Pennsylvania Impressionist art and welcomes 135,000 visitors annually.
