Southampton, Pennsylvania takes its name from Southampton, England — the major seaport on England’s southern coast from which the followers of William Penn sailed to Pennsylvania. This makes it one of the few American communities named for the place of departure rather than a destination. The land itself was conveyed by Lenni-Lenape Chief Tamanend to William Penn by Deed dated June 23, 1683, purchased with wampum and commodities including clothing, fish hooks, axes, and knives. By 1685, the Provincial Council recognized Southampton as a township, with thirteen original landholders named on Penn’s Surveyor General Thomas Holme’s 1684 map of the province. Among the first settlers were English Quakers who formed the Southampton Baptist Church in 1746, and Dutch colonists who arrived in the 1700s — the Vandikes, Vansandts, Cornells, Krewsons, and Hogelands, migrating south from Long Island — who settled the village later renamed Churchville when a Reformed Church was built on Bristol Road. Dutch remained the language of services at that church until 1794.
In 1785, a watchmaker and inventor named John Fitch tested a 23-inch model of a steam-powered boat in a small stream at the rear of the General Davis House on Street Road in Upper Southampton Township. Fitch’s work on steam propulsion predated Robert Fulton’s celebrated 1807 North River Steamboat by over 20 years. Upper Southampton Township memorializes Fitch’s invention on its official seal today. The Davisville Seminary of 1843 — still standing on its original site on Street Road — carries in its charter a telling provision: the building could be used for public meetings, ‘abolition excepted.’ The Churchville Nature Center, Bucks County’s first nature center, features a recreated Lenape Village and two miles of hiking trails adjacent to the Churchville Reservoir — a reminder of the Lenape presence that preceded Penn’s deed of 1683.
