The name Perkasie comes from the Lenape Unami phrase meaning ‘where the hickory nuts were cracked’ — a place name that reflects the Lenape village that stood on this ground before William Penn’s Manor of Perkasie was established. The manor, laid out and surveyed in 1708 and encompassing 11,462 acres embracing most of Hilltown and Rockhill Township, eventually became the agricultural community that Joseph Hendricks of Sellersville began transforming in 1872 when he purchased land near the North Penn Railroad and established a village. Incorporated on May 10, 1879 with 68 residents — petition signatures including names still familiar in the borough: Moyer, Hendricks, Groff, Benner, Swartley — Perkasie grew rapidly into the third-largest station on the North Penn line, with 22 trains operating by 1891, 19 of which stopped here.
The Lehigh Valley Transit Company’s electric interurban trolley line operated through Perkasie hourly from 1901 to 1951, connecting the borough to Allentown to the north and Philadelphia to the south via Sellersville, Souderton, Lansdale, and Norristown. During World War II, with gasoline rationed and automobile travel restricted, the trolley carried a very large number of passengers through the North Penn Valley. After the war, its business collapsed and service ceased in 1951. The LVT tunnel that passed under the former Reading Railroad’s line to Bethlehem still stands under 4th Street in Perkasie today, with a trolley mural painted on one wall — a reminder visible to anyone who walks through it.
In Lenape Park, the South Perkasie Covered Bridge stands as the oldest covered bridge in Bucks County, the third oldest in Pennsylvania, and the seventh oldest covered bridge in the United States out of approximately 800 remaining. Perkasie Borough Council voted unanimously in September 2024 to return the bridge to public pedestrian service. Lake Lenape Park — the 122-acre greenbelt connecting Perkasie and Sellersville, created during the Great Depression by restoring a dam and re-watering the East Branch of the Perkiomen Creek — reflects the community’s tradition of civic investment. Cigar manufacturing was once a primary industry — one factory alone shipped 150,000 cigars per month to Honolulu.
