The land that is now Wyndmoor was part of the original grant that William Penn gave to his wife, Gulielma Maria Springett Penn, in the 1680s — surveyed as Penn’s Manor of Springfield and established as one of the founding family’s original Pennsylvania holdings. Edward T. Stotesbury — senior partner at Drexel & Company and one of Philadelphia’s most powerful banking figures — commissioned architect Horace Trumbauer to design Whitemarsh Hall on 300 acres of Springfield Township. The 147-room Georgian Revival mansion was completed in 1921 and became one of the defining addresses of the Philadelphia social world, with Winston Churchill among its visitors. After Eva Stotesbury’s death, the estate was sold, the grounds were developed into the residential neighborhoods that became Wyndmoor in the late 1940s and 1950s, and the mansion itself was demolished in 1980. The columns of the portico and pieces of the estate’s statuary survive in the community today — visible to residents as reminders of the extraordinary history beneath the streets they call home.
