Schwenksville Borough’s history along the Perkiomen Creek begins in 1684, when the Lenni-Lenape ceded land along the creek to William Penn in one of the earliest land transfers in what would become Montgomery County. Incorporated as a borough in 1903, it takes its name from George Schwenk, a prominent settler — a name that echoes through local history in his son Jacob Schwenk, who served in the Continental Army under General Washington. Pennsylvania’s first copper mine was located in Schwenksville. The icehouses that once stood along the Perkiomen Creek supplied ice shipped regularly to Philadelphia through the 19th century. The Pennypacker Mansion and Sunrise Mill are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the first days of October 1777, Schwenksville’s fields and roads were filled with the Continental Army. General Washington and his forces camped in and around the borough September 26–29, 1777 — in the days leading up to the Battle of Germantown on October 4 — and returned to encamp again October 4–8 in the battle’s immediate aftermath. Washington’s headquarters was likely at the Henry Kelly House along the creek, which he called ‘Pawling’s Mill.’ The bulk of the army camped at Pennypacker Mills on the opposite bank. The Perkiomen Creek that Washington’s men crossed and camped beside is the same creek whose Lenape name means ‘muddy waters’ and ‘where the cranberries grow.’ Hall & Oates wrote their song ‘Perkiomen’ about this creek. Catherine Gilbert Murdock’s young adult novel Dairy Queen (2006), whose protagonist D.J. Schwenk shares the founding family’s name, was inspired by Schwenksville.
