When Dom Pedro II — the Emperor of Brazil and the last monarch of the Brazilian Empire — traveled to Philadelphia in 1875 to attend the opening of the U.S. Centennial Exhibition with President Ulysses S. Grant, he stayed at ‘Idlewilde,’ the guest house on Main Street that still stands in North Wales today. The artist William T. Trego (1858–1909), who had his home and studio in North Wales and used costumed local residents as models, created his most celebrated work here: ‘The March to Valley Forge’ of 1883, depicting Washington’s Continental Army on the move to their famous winter encampment.
