Fort Washington takes its name from one of the most consequential encampments of the American Revolution. Following the British victory at the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777, George Washington’s Continental Army — approximately 12,000 troops — withdrew to the Whitemarsh Valley heights and established a defensive position from November 2 through December 11, 1777. Washington used the elevated terrain of what is now Fort Washington, including Militia Hill, to fortify against British probes from Philadelphia. The Battle of White Marsh, fought December 5–8, 1777, saw British forces under General Howe march out to test Washington’s position, but Howe withdrew without a major engagement. On December 19, 1777, Washington’s army broke camp and began the march to Valley Forge. Fort Washington is the community immediately before Valley Forge in the arc of that extraordinary winter.
The Clifton House, built in 1801 and serving as the headquarters of the Historical Society of Fort Washington since 1937, stands within Fort Washington State Park as the community’s institutional memory — housing a museum and library of local history adjacent to the 493 acres of park that preserve the original ground.
